French See also:province of Beaujolais was formed by the development of the See also:ancient seigniory of Beaujeu (See also:department of Rh6ne, See also:arrondissement of Villefranche). The lords of Beaujeu held from the loth See also:century onwards a high See also:rank in feudal society. In 1210 See also:Guichard of Beaujeu was sent by See also:Philip See also:Augustus on an See also:embassy to See also:Pope See also:Innocent III.; he was See also:present at the French attack on See also:Dover, where he died in 1216. His son See also:Humbert took See also:part in the See also:wars against the Albigenses and became See also:constable of See also:France. Isabeau, daughter of this Humbert, married Renaud, See also:count of Forez; and their second son, See also:Louis, assumed the name and arms of Beaujeu. His son Guichard, called the See also:Great, had a very warlike See also:life, fighting for the See also:king of France, for the count of See also:Savoy and for his own See also:hand. He was taken prisoner by the Dauphinois in 1325, thereby losing important estates. Guichard's son, See also:Edward of Beaujeu, See also:marshal of France, fought at See also:Crecy, and perished in the See also:battle of See also:Ardres in 1351. His son died without issue in 1374, and was succeeded by his See also:cousin, Edward of Beaujeu, See also:lord of Perreux, who gave his estates of Beaujolais and See also:Dombes to Louis II., See also:duke of See also:Bourbon, in 1400. See also:Pierre de Bourbon was lord of Beaujeu in 1474, when he married See also:Anne of France, daughter of Louis XI., and this is why that princess retained the name of See also:lady of Beaujeu. See also:Louise of Savoy, See also:mother of See also:Francis I., got Beaujolais assigned to herself despite the claims of the constable de Bourbon.

In 1531 the province was reunited to the See also:

crown; but Francis II. gave it back to the See also:Montpensier See also:branch of the Bourbons in 156o, from which See also:house it passed to that of See also:Orleans. The See also:title of See also:comte de Beaujolais was See also:borne by a son of Philippe " Egalite," duke of Orleans, See also:born in 1779, died in 1808. (M.
