BIXIO, NINO (1821-1873) , See also:Italian soldier, was See also:born on the 2nd of See also:October 1821. While still a boy he was compelled by his parents to embrace a maritime career. After numerous adventures he returned to See also:Italy in 1846, joined the Giovine Italia, and, on 4th See also:November 1847, made himself conspicuous at See also:Genoa by seizing the bridle of See also:Charles See also:Albert's See also:horse and crying, " Pass the See also:Ticino, Sire, and we are all with you." He fought through the See also:campaign of 1848, became See also:captain under See also:Garibaldi at See also:Rome in 1849, taking prisoners an entire See also:French See also:battalion, and gaining the See also:gold See also:medal for military valour. In 1859 he commanded a Garibaldian battalion, and gained the military See also:cross of See also:Savoy. Joining the See also:Marsala expedition in 186o, he turned the See also:day in favour of Garibaldi at See also:Calatafimi, was wounded at See also:Palermo, but recovered in See also:time to besiege Reggio in See also:Calabria (21st of See also:August 186o), and, though again wounded, took See also:part in the See also:battle of See also:Volturno, where his See also:leg was broken. Elected See also:deputy in 1861, he endeavoured to reconcile See also:Cavour and Garibaldi. In 1866, at the See also:head of the seventh See also:division, he covered the Italian See also:retreat from See also:Custozza, ignoring the See also:Austrian See also:summons to surrender. Created senator in See also:February 187o, he was in the following See also:September given command of a division during the See also:movement against Rome, took Civita Vecchia, and participated in the See also:general attack upon Rome (loth September 1870). He died of See also:cholera at See also:Achin See also:Bay in See also:Sumatra en route for See also:Batavia, whither he had gone in command of a commercial expedition (16th See also:December 1873).
