He studied See also:art in See also:Paris in 1861-62, and subsequently lived mainly in See also:London; he was much influenced by See also:Frederick See also:Walker, and the delicacy and See also:grace of his pictures soon made his reputation. He was elected an A.R.A. in 1879, and R.A. in 1896, and a member of the See also:National See also:Academy of See also:Design in New See also:York in 1871. His pictures of Dutch See also:life and scenery were especially characteristic; and his subject-pictures, such as the " Return of the See also:Mayflower " and " The See also:Scarlet See also:Letter," were very popular in See also:America.
