His See also:early studies took the direction of the See also:science of fortification, and as an engineer officer he saw service in the latter years of the See also:Thirty Years' See also:War, and in See also:Poland. As See also:adjutant-See also:general and engineer adviser to See also:Charles X. (Gustavus), he had a See also:great See also:share in the famous See also:crossing of the frozen Belts, and at the sieges of See also:Copenhagen and Kronborg he directed the See also:engineers. In spite of these. distinguished services, Dahlberg remained an obscure See also:lieutenant-See also:colonel for many years. His patriotism, however, proved See also:superior to the tempting offers Charles II. of See also:England made to induce him to enter the See also:British service, though, in that See also:age of professional soldiering, there was nothing in the offer that a See also:man of See also:honour could not accept. At last his talents were recognized, and in 1676 he became director-general of fortifications. In the See also:wars of the next twenty-five years Dahlberg again rendered distinguished service, alike in attack (as at See also:Helsingborg in 1677, and Dunamunde in 1700) and See also:defence (as in the two sieges of See also:Riga in 1700): and his See also:work in repairing the fortresses of his own See also:country, not less important, earned for him the See also:title of the " See also:Vauban of See also:Sweden." He was also the founder of the Swedish engineer See also:corps. He retired as See also:- FIELD (a word common to many West German languages, cf. Ger. Feld, Dutch veld, possibly cognate with O.E. f olde, the earth, and ultimately with root of the Gr. irAaror, broad)

He wrote a memoir of his See also:life (to be found in Svenska Bibliotek, 1757) and an See also:account of the See also:campaigns of Charles X. (ed. Lundblad, Stockholm, 1823).
