ESSLINGEN , a See also:town of See also:Germany, in the See also:kingdom of See also:Wurttemberg, in a fertile See also:district on the See also:Neckar, 9 M. S.E. from See also:Stuttgart, on the railway to See also:Ulm. Pop. (1905) 29,750. It is surrounded by See also:medieval walls with towers and bastions, and has thirteen suburbs, one lying on an See also:island in the See also:river. On a commanding height above the town lies the old citadel. The inner town has an old (1430) and a new Rathaus, the latter, formerly a See also:palace, an exceedingly handsome edifice. The See also: Esslingen, which See also:dates from the 8th century, became a town in 886. It was soon a See also:place of importance; it became a See also:free imperial See also:city in 1209 and was surrounded with walls by See also:order of the See also:emperor See also:Frederick II. Its See also:liberty was frequently threatened by the rulers of Wurttemberg, but it did not become See also:part of that See also:country until 18oz. See K. H. S.
