ESSLINGEN , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the See also:kingdom of See also:Wurttemberg, in a fertile See also:district on the See also:Neckar, 9 M. S.E. from See also:Stuttgart, on the railway to See also:Ulm. Pop. (1905) 29,750. It is surrounded by See also:medieval walls with towers and bastions, and has thirteen suburbs, one lying on an See also:island in the See also:river. On a commanding height above the town lies the old citadel. The inner town has an old (1430) and a new Rathaus, the latter, formerly a See also:palace, an exceedingly handsome edifice. The See also:church of Our See also:Lady (Frauenkirche) is a See also:fine See also:Gothic See also:building of the 15th See also:century, and has a beautifully sculptured See also:doorway and a lattice See also:spire 240 ft. high. The church of St See also:Dionysius dated from the 13th century, and possesses a fine See also:screen and a See also:ciborium of 1486. Esslingen possesses several See also:schools, a See also:theatre and a richly endowed See also:hospital, while its municipal archives contain much valuable literature bearing especially on the See also:period of the See also:Reformation. The town has railway, See also:machine and See also:electrical See also:works; See also:cloth, gloves and buttons are also manufactured here, and there are See also:spinning-See also:mills. There is a large lithographic See also:establishment, and a consider-able See also:trade is done in See also:wine and See also:fruit, the wines of Esslingen being very famous.

Esslingen, which See also:

dates from the 8th century, became a town in 886. It was soon a See also:place of importance; it became a See also:free imperial See also:city in 1209 and was surrounded with walls by See also:order of the See also:emperor See also:Frederick II. Its See also:liberty was frequently threatened by the rulers of Wurttemberg, but it did not become See also:part of that See also:country until 18oz. See K. H. S.
