In 1167 Henry suggested a See also:marriage between Geoffrey and See also:Constance (d. 1201), daughter and heiress of Conan IV., duke of Brittany (d. 1171); and Conan not only assented, perhaps under compulsion, to this proposal, but surrendered the greater See also:part of his unruly duchy to the English king. Having received the See also:homage of the See also:Breton nobles, Geoffrey joined his See also:brothers, Henry and See also:Richard, who, in See also:alliance with See also:Louis VII. of See also:France, were in revolt against their See also:father; but he made his See also:peace in 1174, afterwards helping to restore See also:order in Brittany and See also:Normandy, and aiding the new See also:French king, See also:Philip See also:Augustus, to crush some rebellious vassals. In See also:July 1181 his marriage with Constance was celebrated, and practically the whole of his subsequent See also:life was spent in warfare with his See also:brother Richard. In 1183 he made peace with his father, who had come to Richard's assistance; but a fresh struggle soon See also:broke out for the See also:possession of See also:Anjou, and Geoffrey was in See also:Paris treating for aid with .Philip Augustus, when he died on the 19th of August1 186. He See also:left a daughter, Eleanor, and his wife See also:bore a See also:posthumous son, the unfortunate See also:Arthur.
