After receiving a military See also:education in See also:England and in See also:Austria he entered the Hungarian hussars in 1823, in which he served until after his See also:marriage with a daughter of See also:Baron Spleny, a general officer in the imperial service. At the outbreak of the Hungarian See also:War in 1848, he re-entered active service as an officer of the Hungarian Honveds, and he won See also:great distinction in the See also:action of Sukoro (See also:September 29, 1848) and the See also:battle of See also:Schwechat (See also:October 30). He added to his reputation as a See also:leader in various actions in the See also:winter of 1848-1849, and after the battle of Kapolna was made a general officer. He served in important and sometimes See also:independent commands to the end of the war, after which he escaped to See also:Turkey. In 1852 he entered the service of the See also:sultan. He was made a pasha and See also:lieutenant-general without being required to See also:change his faith, and rendered distinguished service in the See also:campaign against the Russians in See also:Asia See also:Minor (1854-55).
