Young Hamelin was a prisoner of See also:war for a See also:short See also:time. He returned to See also:France in 1811. On the fall of the See also:Empire he had better See also:fortune than most of the See also:Napoleonic See also:officers who were turned ashore. In 1821 he became See also:lieutenant, and in 1823 took part in the French expedition under the See also:duke of See also:Angouleme into See also:Spain. In 1828 he was appointed See also:captain of the " Acteon," and was engaged till 1831 on the See also:coast of See also:Algiers and in. the See also:conquest of the See also:town and See also:country. His first command as See also:flag officer was in the Pacific, where he showed much tact during the dispute over the See also:Marquesas Islands with See also:England in 1844. He was promoted See also:vice-admiral in 1848. During the See also:Crimean War he commanded in the See also:Black Sea, and co-operated with Admiral Dundas in the See also:bombardment of See also:Sevastopol 17th of See also:October 18 J4. His relations with his English colleague were not very cordial. On the 7th of See also:December 1854 he was promoted admiral. Shortly afterwards he was recalled to France, and was named See also:minister of marine. His See also:administration lasted till 186o, and was remarkable for the expeditions to See also:Italy and See also:China organized under his directions; but it was even more notable for the See also:energy shown in adopting and developing the use of See also:armour. The See also:launch of the "Gloire " pi set the example of constructing sea-going ironclads. The first English ironclad, the " See also:Warrior," was designed as an See also:answer to the " Gloire." When See also:Napoleon III. made his first concession to Liberal opposition, Admiral Hamelin was one of the ministers sacrificed.
