Hersent's typical works, however, belong to the See also:period of the Restoration; " Louis XVI. relieving the Afflicted" (Versailles) and " See also:Daphnis and Chloe " (engraved by Langier and by Gelee) were both in the Salon of 18'7; at that of '8'9 the " See also:Abdication of Gustavus See also:Vasa " brought to Hersent a See also:medal of See also:honour, but the picture, See also:purchased by the See also:duke of See also:Orleans, was destroyed at the Palais Royal in '848, and the See also:engraving by Henriquel-See also:Dupont is now its See also:sole See also:record. He continued in favour under See also:Charles X., for whom was executed " Monks of See also:Mount St Gotthard," exhibited in 1824. In 183' Hersent made his last See also:appearance at the Salon with portraits of Louis Philippe, See also:Marie-Amelie and the duke of See also:Montpensier; that of the See also:king though See also:good, is not equal to the portrait of See also:Spontini (See also:Berlin), which is probably Hersent's chef-d'teuvre. After this date Hersent ceased to exhibit at the yearly salons. Although in '846 he sent an excellent likeness of Delphine See also:Gay and one or two other works to the rooms of the Societe d'Artistes, he could not be tempted from his usual reserve even by the See also:international contest of 1855• He died on the 2nd of See also:October '86o.
