ToMMASO MOCENIGO (1343-1423) commanded the crusading See also:fleet in the expedition to See also:Nicopolis in 1396, and also won battles against the Genoese. While he was Venetian See also:ambassador at See also:Cremona he was elected See also:doge (1414), and he escaped in See also:secret, fearing that he might be held a prisoner by Gabrino Fondolo, See also:tyrant of that See also:city. He made See also:peace with the See also:Turkish See also:sultan, but when hostilities See also:broke out afresh his fleet defeated that of the See also:Turks at See also:Gallipoli. During his reign the See also:patriarch of See also:Aquileia was forced to cede his territories to the republic (1420), which also acquired See also:Friuli and See also:Dalmatia. Tommaso greatly encouraged See also:commerce, reconstructed the ducal See also:palace and commenced the library. PIETRO MOCENIGO, doge from 1474 to 1476, was one of the greatest Venetian admirals,and revived the fortunes of his See also:country's See also:navy, which had fallen very See also:low after the defeat at Negropont in 1470. He then defeated the Turks who were besieging See also:Scutari, but he there contracted an illness of which he died. GIOVANNI MOCENIGO, Pietro's See also:brother, who was doge from 1478 to 1485, fought against Mohammed II. and Ercole I., See also:duke of See also:Ferrara, from whom he recaptured See also:Rovigo and the Polesine. See also:LUIGI MOCENIGO was doge from 1570 to 1577. During his reign See also:Venice lost the fortresses See also:Nicosia and Famagosta in Cyprus. He took See also:part in the See also:battle of See also:Lepanto, but after the loss of Cyprus he was forced to make peace with the Turks and to See also:hand them back his conquests. See also:ANDREA MOCENIGO, who flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries, was a senator of the republic and a historian; he composed a See also:work on the See also:league of See also:Cambrai entitled See also:Belli memorabilis Cameracensis adversus Venetos historiae libri vi. (Venice, 1525). Another LUIGI MocENIG0 was doge from 1700 tO 1709, and his brother SEBASTIANO from 1722 tO 1732. ALVISE MOCENIGO (1701-1778), who was doge from 1763 until his See also:death, restricted' the privileges of the See also:clergy, and in consequence came into See also:bitter conflict with See also:Pope See also:Clement XIII.
