MULLINGAR , a See also:

Pop. (Igor), 4500. It is a junction on the Midland See also:Great Western railway where the See also:branch for See also:Longford, See also:Sligo and See also:Cavan leaves the See also:main See also:line. The See also:principal churches are the See also:parish See also:church (1813) with See also:tower and See also:spire, and the See also:Roman See also:Catholic See also:cathedral for the See also:diocese of See also:Meath. Tanning, See also:brewing, and the manufacture of coarse woollens are carried on, and the town is the centre for the agricultural See also:trade of the See also:district. Mullingar was one of the See also:ancient See also:palatinate towns, but its See also:present See also:appearance is See also:modern. It possessed an See also:Augustine See also:convent founded in 1227, and a Dominican convent founded in 1239, but both were dissolved by See also:Elizabeth. The town was the headquarters of See also:William III. before the See also:siege of See also:Athlone. It formerly returned two members to See also:parliament, but was disfranchised at the See also:Union in 1800. Mullingar is a centre for the See also:trout-fishing in the Westmeath loughs, being in proximity to Loughs Ennell and Owel.
