PERIGORD , one of the old provinces of See also:

France, formed See also:part of the military See also:government of See also:Guienne and See also:Gascony, and was bounded on the N. by See also:Angoumois, on the E. by See also:Limousin and See also:Quercy, on the S. by See also:Agenais and Bazadais, and on the W. by Bordelais and See also:Saintonge. It is now represented by the departments of See also:Dordogne and part of See also:Lot-et-See also:Garonne. Perigord was in two divisions: Perigord See also:blanc (cap. Perigueux) and Perigord noir (cap. See also:Sarlat). In the See also:time of See also:Caesar it formed the civitas Petrocoriorum, with Vesunna (Perigueux) as its See also:capital. It became later part of Aquitania secunda and formed the pages petragoricus, afterwards the See also:diocese of Perigueux. Since the 8th See also:century it had its own See also:counts (see the Histoire genealogique of P. See also:Anselme, tome iii.), who were feudatories of the See also:dukes of See also:Aquitaine and in the 13th century were the vassals of the See also:king of See also:England. In the 15th century the See also:county passed into the hands of the dukes of See also:Orleans, and in the 16th came to the See also:family of d'See also:Albret, becoming See also:Crown See also:land again on the See also:accession of See also:Henry IV. See Dessalles, Histoire du Perigord (1888), the Bulletin of the Societe historique et archeologique du Perigord (1874 seq.), l'Inventaire sommaire de la " Collection de Perigord " in the Bibliotheque nationale (1874) ; the Dictionnaire topographique du departement de la Dordogne by the Vicomte de Gourgues (1873).
