He distinguished himself at once in the See also:battle of See also:Brandywine, was made a brigadier-See also:general and chief of See also:cavalry by See also:Congress, and fought at See also:Germantown, and in the battles of the See also:winter 1777-78, after which he raised a mixed See also:corps called the Pulaski See also:legion. At the See also:head of this force he won further distinction in the See also:southern See also:theatre of See also:war, and successfully defended See also:Charleston in May 1779. He was mortally wounded soon afterwards at the unsuccessful attack on See also:Savannah (Oct. 9) and died two days later on See also:board See also:ship.
