RIVOLI VERONESE , a See also:

village of See also:Venetia, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Verona, on a See also:hill on the right See also:bank of the See also:Adige, 13 M. N.W. of Verona, 617 ft. above See also:sea-level. Pop. (1901) 1340. It is celebrated as the See also:scene of the See also:battle in which, on the 15th of See also:January 1797, See also:Napoleon inflicted a decisive defeat upon the Austrians commanded by Josef Alvintzi, See also:Baron von Barberek (1735—1810) (see See also:FRENCH REVOLUTIONARY See also:WARS). A famous See also:street in See also:Paris (See also:Rue de Rivoli) commemorates the victory, and under the See also:empire See also:Marshal See also:Massena received the See also:title of See also:duke of Rivoli. The strong positions around Rivoli, which command the approaches from See also:Tirol and the upper Adige into the See also:Italian See also:plain, have always been celebrated in military See also:history as a formidable obstacle, and See also:Charles V. and See also:Prince See also:Eugene of See also:Savoy preferred to turn them by difficult See also:mountain paths instead of attacking them directly. See also:Minor engagements, such as rearguard actions and holding attacks, have consequently often taken See also:place about them, notably in the See also:campaign of 1796–97. An engagement of this See also:character was fought here in 1848 between the See also:Austrian and the Piedmontese troops.
