URBANA , a See also:

city and the See also:county-seat of See also:Champaign county, See also:Ohio, U.S.A., about 47 M. W. by N. of See also:Columbus. Pop. (189o) 6510; (1900) 6808, including 796 negroes and 405 See also:foreign-See also:born; (1910) 7739. Urbana is served by the See also:Erie, the See also:Pittsburg, See also:Cincinnati, See also:Chicago & St See also:Louis, and the See also:Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St Louis See also:railways, and by the Ohio Electric inter-See also:urban See also:line. It has a public library (189o) and a county See also:children's See also:home (1892), and is the seat of Urbana University (co-educational), founded in 185o under the auspices of the New See also:Church. The city is situated in a fertile farming region. Its manufactures include See also:furniture, telephones, woollen goods, See also:paper, foundry and See also:machine-See also:shop products, &c. Urbana was laid out in 18o5 by See also:Colonel See also:William See also:Ward, of Greenbriar, Va., who owned the See also:land included in the See also:original survey and gave many lots to the county on See also:condition that the proceeds from their See also:sale should be used for public improvements; it was incorporated as a See also:village in 1816 and was chartered as a city in 1867. Colonel Ward .was the grandfather of the sculptor J. Q. A.
