S.W. of See also:Norwich by the See also:Great Eastern railway. Pop. (19o1) 4764. The See also:church of St See also:Mary the Virgin rises on an See also:eminence on the outskirts of the town. It was attached to a See also:Benedictine priory, founded about the beginning of the 12th See also:century as a See also:cell of St Albans See also:abbey by See also:William de Albini. In 1448 this See also:foundation became an abbey. The See also:nave is of ornate See also:Norman See also:work, with a massive See also:triforium, surmounted by a Perpendicular See also:clerestory and a beautiful wooden roof. The broad N. See also:aisle is Perpendicular, and has also a very See also:fine See also:rood See also:screen. At the W. end there is a lofty and graceful Perpendicular See also:tower. The See also:choir, which was used as the conventual church, has See also:left only slight traces, and one See also:arch is See also:standing of a large See also:chapel which adjoined it on the S. In the centre of the town is a picturesque See also:half-timbered market See also:cross (1616), with an octagonal upper chamber raised on massive pillars of See also:wood.

Thomas of See also:Canterbury, is used as a See also:grammar school. At Wymondham on the 7th of See also:July a festival was formerly held in See also:honour of the See also:saint. It was at this festival in 1549 that the See also:rebellion of See also:Robert See also:Ket or Kett came to a See also:head.
