ZACHARIAS, ST , See also:pope from 741 to 752, was a See also:Greek by See also:birth, and appears to have been on intimate terms with See also:Gregory III., whom he succeeded (See also:November 741). Contemporary See also:history dwells chiefly on his See also:great See also:personal See also:influence with the Lombard See also:king Luitprand, and with his successor Rachis; it was largely through his tact in dealing with these princes in a variety of emergencies that the exarchate of See also:Ravenna was rescued from becoming See also:part of the Lombard See also:kingdom. A See also:correspondence, of considerable extent and of great See also:interest, between Zacharias and St See also:Boniface, the apostle of See also:Germany, is still extant, and shows how great was the influence of this pope on events then passing in See also:France and Germany: he encouraged the deposition of Childeric, and it was with his See also:sanction that Boniface crowned See also:Pippin as king of the See also:Franks at See also:Soissons in 752. Zacharias is stated to have remonstrated with the See also:emperor See also:Constantine Copronymus on the part he had taken in the iconoclastic controversy. He died on the 14th of See also:March 752, and was succeeded by See also:Stephen II. The letters and decrees of Zacharias are published in See also:Migne, Patrolog. See also:lat. lxxxix. p. 917-960.
