He emigrated to See also:Canada in 1826, and in 1831 entered the employ of the See also:chief See also:shipbuilding and See also:grain-See also:shipping See also:firm of See also:Montreal, of which he became a junior partner in 1835. In 1853 he organized the Allan See also:Line of steamships, plying between Montreal, See also:Liverpool and See also:Glasgow; till his See also:death he was closely associated with the commercial growth and prosperity of Canada, and in 1871 was knighted in recognition of his services. In 1872–1893 he obtained from the Canadian See also:government a See also:charter for See also:building the Canadian Pacific railway, but the disclosures made with reference to his contributions to the funds of the Conservative party led to the Pacific See also:scandal (see CANADA, See also:History), and that See also:company was soon afterwards dissolved. He died in See also:Edinburgh on the 9th of See also:December 1882.
