He was educated at Jesus See also:College, See also:Cambridge, and after taking his degree of M.A. in 1839 was elected to a fellowship of the college. In-spired by the teachings of See also:Adam See also:Sedgwick, his See also:attention was given to See also:geology, and in 184o he was elected See also:professor of geology in See also:King's College, London, a See also:post which he held until 1853. Meanwhile he became a See also:fellow of the Royal Society in 1844, and from that date until 1847 he was See also:vice-secretary of the See also:Geological Society and edited its Quarterly See also:Journal. The See also:practical See also:side of geology now came to occupy his See also:chief attention, and he visited various parts of See also:Europe and the See also:British Islands as a consulting geologist and See also:mining engineer. He was also in 1868 and for many years examiner in See also:physical See also:geography to the See also:science and See also:art See also:department. He died at Melton near See also:Woodbridge, on the 13th of May 1880.
