He saw active service against the Seminoles in See also:Florida, and took See also:part as an See also:artillery officer in the Mexican See also:War, winning the brevets of See also:captain and See also:major for his conduct at Contreras-Churubusco and Chapultepec. In command first of a See also:brigade and later of a See also:division in the See also:Army of the See also:Potomac, he took part in the Seven Days' and See also:Maryland See also:campaigns. At the See also:battle of See also:Antietam he was twice wounded, but remained on the See also:field. Soon afterwards he was given command of the VI. See also:corps, in which position he took an important part in the battle of See also:Chancellorsville, capturing the famous lines of Fredericksburg and fighting the severe battle of See also:Bank's See also:Ford. The VI. corps See also:bore a See also:share in the battle of See also:Gettysburg, having made a See also:fine forced See also:march to the field. Sedgwick had been offered the See also:chief command of the army upon Hooker's resignation; but he declined, and retained his command of the VI. corps during the Virginian See also:campaign of the autumn of 1863, being on several occasions placed by See also:Meade in See also:charge of a wing of the army. He was also given the command of the whole army in Meade's See also:absence. At the See also:action of Rappahannock station Sedgwick by a brilliant See also:night attack destroyed two brigades of Early's division (See also:November 7th).

Grant became commanding-general and the Army of the Potomac was reorganized in three corps, the VI. was one of these, and Sedgwick thus led his old corps, now greatly augmented, at the battle of the See also:Wilderness. At the opening of the battle of See also:Spottsylvania See also:Court See also:House, Sedgwick was killed (9th of May 1864) by a shot from a Confederate skirmisher. A See also:monument to his memory, See also:cast from the guns taken in action by the VI. corps, was erected at West Point in 1868.
