In the vicinity is the beautiful old See also:mansion of Stella, and below it Stellaheugh, to which the victorious Scottish See also:army crossed from See also:Newburn on the See also:Northumberland See also:bank in 164o, after which they occupied Newcastle. BLAYE-ET-STE LUCE, a See also:town of See also:south-western See also:France, See also:capital of an See also:arrondissement in the See also:department of See also:Gironde, on the right bank of the Gironde (here over 2 M. wide), 35 M. N. of See also:Bordeaux by See also:rail. Pop. (1906) of the town, 3423; of the See also:commune, 4890. The town has a citadel built by See also:Vauban on a See also:rock beside the See also:river, and embracing in its See also:enceinte ruins of an old See also:Gothic See also:chateau. The latter contains the See also:tomb of Caribert, See also:king of See also:Toulouse, and spn of See also:Clotaire II.

Blaye is also defended by the Fort Pate on an See also:

island in the river and the Fort Medoc on its See also:left bank, both of the 17th See also:century. The town is the seat of a sub-See also:prefect, and has tribunals of first instance and of See also:commerce and a communal See also:college. It has a small river-See also:port, and carries on See also:trade in See also:wine, See also:brandy, See also:grain, See also:fruit and See also:timber. The industries include the See also:building of small vessels, distilling, See also:flour-milling, and the manufacture of oil and candles. See also:Fine red wine is produced in the district. In See also:ancient times Blaye (Blavia) was a port of the Santones. Tradition states that the See also:hero See also:Roland was buried in its See also:basilica, which was on the site of the citadel. It was See also:early an important stronghold which played an important See also:part in the See also:wars against the See also:English and the Religious Wars. The duchess of See also:Berry was imprisoned in its fortress in 1832-1833.
