At the Revolution he See also:left France with his See also:father, then See also:comte d'See also:Artois, and served in the See also:army of See also:Conde from 1792 to 1797. He afterwards joined the See also:Russian army, and in 18or took up his See also:residence in See also:England, where he remained for thirteen years. During that See also:time he married an Englishwoman, See also:Anna See also:Brown, by whom he had two daughters, afterwards the baronne de Charette and the comtesse de Lucinge-Faucigny. The See also:marriage was cancelled for See also:political reasons in 1814, when the See also:duke set out for France. His See also:frank, open See also:manners gained him some favour with his countrymen, and See also:Louis XVIII. named him See also:commander-in-See also:chief of the army at See also:Paris on the return of See also:Napoleon from See also:Elba. He was, however, unable to retain the See also:loyalty of his troops, and retired to See also:Ghent during the See also:Hundred Days. In 1816 he married the princess See also:Caroline Ferdinande See also:Louise (1798-1870), eldest daughter of See also:King See also:Francis I. of See also:Naples. On the 13th of See also:February 182o he was mortally wounded, when leaving the See also:opera-See also:house at Paris with his wife, by a saddler named Louis See also:Pierre Louvel. Seven months after his See also:death the duchess gave See also:birth to a son, who received the See also:title of duke of See also:Bordeaux, but who is known in See also:history as the comte de See also:Chambord. A daughter, afterwards duchess of See also:Parma, was born in 1819. The duchess of Berry was compelled to follow Charles X. to Holyrood after See also:July 183o, but it was with the See also:resolution of returning speedily and making an See also:attempt to secure the See also:throne for her son.

From England she went to See also:

Italy, and in See also:April 1832 she landed near See also:Marseilles, but, receiving no support, was compelled to make her way towards the loyal districts of See also:Vendee and See also:Brittany. Her followers, however, were defeated, and, after remaining concealed for five months in a house in See also:Nantes, she was betrayed to the See also:government and imprisoned in the See also:castle of Blaye. Here she gave birth to a daughter, the See also:fruit of a See also:secret marriage contracted with an See also:Italian nobleman, See also:Count Ettore Lucchesi-Palli (1805-1864). The announcement of this marriage at once deprived the duchess of the sympathies of her supporters. She was no longer an See also:object of fear to the See also:French government, who released her in See also:June 1833. She set See also:sail for See also:Sicily, and, joining her See also:husband, lived in retirement from that time till her death, at Brunnensee in See also:Switzerland, in April 187o.
