Here he improved on the " detector " See also:lock (q.v.), originally patented in 1818 by his See also:brother, See also:Jeremiah Chubb. He soon moved to See also:London and then to See also:Wolverhampton, where he employed two See also:hundred hands. In 1835 he patented a See also:process intended to render See also:safes (q.v.) burglar-See also:- PROOF (in M. Eng. preove, proeve, preve, &°c., from O. Fr . prueve, proeve, &c., mod. preuve, Late. Lat. proba, probate, to prove, to test the goodness of anything, probus, good)
proof and fireproof, and subsequently established a large safe-factory in London. He died on the 16th of May 1845, and was succeeded in the business by his son, See also:John Chubb (1816-1872), who patented various improvements in the products of the See also:firm and largely increased its output. The factories were combined under one roof in a See also:model plant, and the business See also:grew to enormous proportions.
After John Chubb's See also:death the business was converted into a limited See also:company under the management of his three sons.
