CHUNAR, or CHUNARGHUR , a See also:town and See also:ancient fortress of See also:India, in the See also:district of See also:Mirzapur, in the See also:United Provinces, situated on the See also:south See also:bank of the See also:Ganges. Pop. (1901) 9926. The fort occupies a conspicuous site on the See also:summit of an abrupt See also:rock which commands the See also:river. It was at one See also:time a See also:place of See also:great strength, and still contains a See also:magazine, and is fortified with batteries. In the old citadel on the height, the remains of a See also:Hindu See also:palace with some interesting carvings indicate the former importance of the place. The town, which consists of one or two straggling streets, contains a handsome See also:English See also:church. Chunar is first mentioned in the 16th See also:century, when in See also:possession of Sing Joanpore. In 1530 it became the See also:residence of Shere Shah the Afghan, and See also:forty-five years later was recovered by the See also:emperor See also:Akbar after sustaining a See also:siege of six months. It See also:fell into the hands of the English under See also:General See also:Carnac in 1763 after a prolonged resistance which caused considerable loss to the assailants. A treaty with the See also:nawab of Oudh was signed here by See also:Warren See also:Hastings on behalf of the See also:East India See also:Company in See also:September 1781.
