Coffeyville is served by the See also:Missouri Pacific, the See also:Atchison, Topeka & See also:Santa Fe, the Missouri, Kansas & See also:Texas, and the See also:Saint See also: Coffey, who was a member of the first legislature of the territory of Kansas, was founded in 1869, but in 1871 it was removed about r m. from its See also:original site, now known as " old See also:town." It was incorporated as a city of the third class in 1872 and received a new See also:charter in 1887. Coffeyville became a station on the Leavenworth, See also:Lawrence & See also:Galveston railway (now See also:part of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe), and for several years large See also:numbers of See also:cattle were driven here from See also:Indian Territory and Texas for shipment; in fact, the city's See also:chief importance was as a See also:trade centre for the See also:north part of Indian Territory until natural gas was found here in large quantities in 1892.
