CRUDEN , a See also:

village and See also:parish on the E. See also:coast of See also:Aberdeen-See also:shire, See also:Scotland. Pop. of parish (1901) 3444. It is situated at the See also:head of Cruden See also:Bay, 294 M. N.N.E. of Aberdeen by the See also:Great See also:North of Scotland railway See also:company's See also:branch See also:line from Ellon to Boddam. The See also:golf-course of 18 holes is one of the best in Scotland, and there is a sandy See also:beach, with See also:good bathing. There is some good fishing at See also:Port See also:Erroll, also called See also:Ward of Cruden. Prehistoric remains have been found in the parish, and near Ardendraught, not far from the See also:shore, See also:Malcolm II. is said to have defeated Canute in 1014. The See also:Water of Cruden, which rises a few See also:miles to the See also:west, flows through the village into the North See also:Sea. Slains See also:Castle, a seat of the See also:earl of Erroll, lies to the north of Cruden, but must not be confounded with the old castle of Slains, about 5 M. to the See also:south-west, near the point where, according to tradition, the " St See also:Catherine " of the See also:Spanish See also:Armada foundered in 1588. The Bullers of See also:Buchan are within 2 M. walk of Cruden.
