In 1824–1828 he was See also:professor of belles-lettres in Washington (now Trinity) College, See also:Hartford, See also:Connecticut, and at this See also:time he was one of the editors of the Episcopal Watchman. He was assistant in 1828–183o and See also:rector in 1830-1832 of See also:Christ church, See also:Boston, and was bishop of New Jersey from See also:October 1832 to his See also:death at See also:Burlington, New Jersey, on the 27th of See also:April 1859. The See also:diocese of New Jersey was an unpromising See also:field, but he took up his See also:work there with characteristic vigour, especially in the See also:foundation of St See also:Mary's See also:Hall (1837, for girls) and Burlington College (1846) as demonstrations of his theory of See also:education under church See also:control. His business management of these See also:schools got him heavily into See also:debt, and in the autumn of 1852 a See also:charge of lax See also:administration came before a See also:court of bishops, who dismissed it. The schools showed him an able and See also:wise disciplinarian, and his patriotic orations and sermons prove him a See also:speaker of See also:great See also:power. He belonged to the High Church party and was a brilliant controversialist. He published Songs by the Way (1824), a See also:volume of poems; and his See also:hymns beginning " Softly now the See also:light of See also:day " and " See also:Thou See also:art the Way " are well known. See See also:Life and Writings of George Washington Doane (4 vols., New York, 186o-186x), edited by his son, See also:William Croswell Doane (b. 1832), first bishop of See also:Albany.
