The schools showed him an able and See also:wise disciplinarian, and his patriotic orations and sermons prove him a See also:speaker of See also:great See also:power. He belonged to the High Church party and was a brilliant controversialist. He published Songs by the Way (1824), a See also:volume of poems; and his See also:hymns beginning " Softly now the See also:light of See also:day " and " See also:Thou See also:art the Way " are well known.
