It lies on the See also:north See also:shore of Dornoch See also:Firth, an See also:arm of the North See also:Sea, 74 M. S.S.E. of See also:Mound station on the Highland railway by See also:light railway. Its dry and bracing See also:climate and See also:fine See also:golf course have brought it into See also:great repute as a See also:health and See also:holiday resort. Before the See also:Reformation it was the see of the bishopric of See also:Caithness and See also:Sutherland. The See also:cathedral, built by See also:Bishop See also:Gilbert de See also:Moravia (See also:Moray) (d. 1245), the last See also:Scot enrolled in the See also:Calendar of Scottish See also:saints, was damaged by See also:fire in 1570, during the See also:raid of the See also:Master of Caithness and See also:Mackay of Strathnaver, and afterwards neglected till 1837, when it was restored by the 2nd See also:duke of Sutherland, and has since been used as the See also:parish See also:church. Noticeable for its high roof, See also:low See also:tower and See also:dwarf See also:spire, the church consists of an aisleless See also:nave, See also:chancel (adorned with See also:Chantrey's statue of the 1st duke) and transepts. It is the burying-See also:place of the Sutherland See also:family and contains the remains of sixteen earls. Of the See also:ancient See also:castle, which was also the bishop's See also:palace, only the See also:west tower exists, the See also:rest of the structure having been destroyed in the out-rage of '570.

The county buildings adjoin it. Dornoch became a royal burgh in 1628, and, as one of the See also:

Wick burghs, returns a member to See also:parliament. It was the See also:scene of the last See also:execution for See also:witchcraft in Scotland (1722). At Embo, 2 M. N.N.E., a See also:modern palace.
