His See also:father died in 1756, when his See also:maintenance and See also:education were undertaken by his maternal See also:uncle, Zachary See also:Bayly, a wealthy See also:merchant of See also:Jamaica. About 1759 Bryan went to Jamaica, and joined his uncle, who engaged a private See also:tutor to See also:complete his education, and when Bayly died his See also:nephew inherited his See also:wealth, succeeding also in 1773 to the See also:estate of another 'Jamaica See also:resident named Milne. Edwards soon became a leading member of the. colonial See also:assembly of Jamaica, but in a few years he returned to See also:England, and in 1782 failed to secure a seat in See also:parliament as member for See also:Chichester. He was again in Jamaica from _1787 to 1792, when he settled in England as a See also:West See also:India merchant, making in 1795 another futile See also:attempt to enter parliament, on this occasion as the representative of See also:Southampton. In 1796, however, he became member of parliament for See also:Grampound, retaining his seat until his See also:death at Southampton on the 15th or 16th of See also:July 'Soo. In See also:general Edwards was a supporter of the slave See also:trade, and was described by See also:William Wilber-force as a powerful opponent. By his wife, Martha, daughter of See also:Thomas Phipps of Westbury, he See also:left an only son, See also:Hume. In 1784 Edwards wrote Thoughts on the See also:late Proceedings of See also:Government respecting the Tradeof the West India Islands with the See also:United States of See also:America, in which he attacked the restrictions placed by the government upon trade with the United States. In 1793 he published in two volumes his See also:great See also:work, See also:History, See also:Civil and Commercial, of the See also:British Colonies in the West Indies, and in 1797 published his See also:Historical Survey of the See also:French See also:Colony in the See also:Island of St Domingo. In 18o1 a new edition of both these See also:works with certain additions was published in three volumes under the See also:title of History of the British Colonies in the West Indies. This has been translated into See also:German and parts of it into French and See also:Spanish, and a fifth edition was issued in 1819.

Park returned in 1796 from his celebrated See also:journey in See also:Africa, Edwards, who was secretary of the Association for Promoting the See also:Discovery of the Interior Parts of Africa, See also:drew up from Park's narrative an See also:account of his travels, which was published by the association in their Proceedings; and when Park wrote an account of his journeys he availed himself of Edwards' assistance. Edwards also wrote some poems and some other works See also:relating to the history of the West Indies. He left a See also:short See also:sketch of his See also:life which was prefixed to the edition of the History of the West Indies, published in 18o1.
