EDWARDS, See also:THOMAS See also:CHARLES (1837–1900) , Welsh Non-conformist divine and educationist, was See also:born at See also:Bala, See also:Merioneth, on the 22nd of See also:September 1837, the son of See also:Lewis Edwards (q.v.). His resolve to become a See also:minister was deepened by the revival of 1858-1859. After taking his degrees at See also:London (B.A. 1861, M.A. 1862), he matriculated at St See also:Alban See also:Hall, See also:Oxford, in See also:October 1862, the university having just been opened to dissenters. He obtained a scholarship at See also:Lincoln See also:College in 1864, and took a first class in the school of Literae Humaniores in 1866. He was especially influenced by See also:Mark See also:Pattison and See also:Jowett, who counselled him to be true to the See also:church of his See also:father, in which he had already been ordained. See also:Early in 1867 he became minister at See also:Windsor See also:Street, See also:Liverpool, but See also:left it to become first See also:principal of the University College of See also:Wales at See also:Aberystwyth, which had been established through the efforts of See also:Sir See also:Hugh See also:Owen and other enthusiasts. The college was opened with a See also:staff of three professors and twenty-five students in October 1872, and for some years its career was chequered enough. Edwards, however, proved a skilful See also:pilot, and his hold on the See also:affection of the Welsh See also:people enabled him to raise the college to a high level of efficiency. When it was destroyed by See also:fire in 1885 he collected £251000 to rebuild it; the See also:remainder of the necessary £40,000 being given by the See also:government (£Io,000) and by the people of Aberystwyth (£5000). In 1891 he gave up what had been the See also:main See also:work of his See also:life to accept an undertaking that was even nearer his See also:heart, the principalship of the theological college at Bala.

A stroke of See also:

paralysis in 1894 fatally weakened him, but he continued at work till his See also:death on the 22nd of See also:March 1900. The Calvinistic Methodist Church of Wales bestowed on him every See also:honour in their See also:possession, and he received the degree of D.D. from the See also:universities of See also:Edinburgh (1887) and Wales (1898). His See also:chief See also:works were a Commentary on z See also:Corinthians (1885), the See also:Epistle to the See also:Hebrews (" Expositor's See also:Bible " See also:series, 1888), and The See also:God-See also:Man (" See also:Davies Lecture," 1895).
