He graduated at Yale in 1837, was admitted to the See also:bar in New See also:York in 1841, and soon took high See also:rank in his profession. In 186o he was chairman of the New York delegation to the Republican See also:national See also:convention. In 1861 he was an unsuccessful See also:candidate for the See also:United States senatorship from New York. He was See also:chief counsel for See also:President See also:Johnson during the See also:impeachment trial, and from See also:July 1868 until See also:March 1869 he was See also:attorney-See also:general of the United States. In 1872 he was counsel for the United States in the " See also:Alabama " See also:arbitration. During President See also:Hayes's ad-ministration (1877–1881) he was secretary of See also:state; and from 1885 to 1891 he was one of the senators from New York. As an orator Senator Evarts stood in the foremost rank, and some of his best speeches were published. He died in New York on the 28th of February 1901.
