He studied at See also:Bowdoin 'See also:College, where he graduated in 185o, after which he proceeded to See also:Berlin. Subsequently he took a degree in divinity at the Harvard Divinity School. From 1859 to 1869 he was pastor of the See also:Independent Congregational (Unitarian) See also:church at See also:Bangor, Maine. This See also:charge he resigned to take the Hussey professorship of See also:theology at Harvard University, and, in 1878, became See also:dean of the See also:faculty of theology. Interested in a variety of subjects, he devoted himself chiefly to the See also:philosophy of See also:religion, and published The See also:Science of Thought (See also:Boston, 1869; revised 1891). He also wrote See also:Fichte's Science of Knowledge (1884) ; See also:Poetry, See also:Comedy and See also:Duty (r888); Religions before See also:Christianity (1883); See also:Ethics for See also:Young See also:People (1891); The See also:Gospel of See also:Paul (1892). He died at See also:Cambridge on the 16th of See also:October 1900.
