SOCIETIES .—(a) Old Established.—These in See also:London are: The Royal See also:Academy, the Royal See also:Water See also:Colour Society, the Royal See also:Institute of Painters in Water See also:Colours, the Society of Oil Painters, and the Royal Society of See also:British Artists. In the provinces, the See also:Birmingham Royal Society of Artists has been in existence since 1825, and has a See also:life academy with professors attached. (b) See also:Modern.—In this See also:category are many which reflect the new spirit which came into See also:artistic life in the last See also:quarter of the 19th See also:century. The New See also:English See also:Art See also:Club, founded in 1885 as a protest against See also:academic art, achieves its purpose by See also:exhibition only. The See also:International Society of Painters and Engravers, again, represents the wider ideas of the loth century. The Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, consisting of See also:fellows and associates, not exceeding 15o in all, conserves the interests of a numerous See also:body of workers, and, in addition to holding exhibitions, confers diplomas (R.E. and A.R.E.) on the exhibitors of meritorious etchings or engravings. The Society of See also:Women Artists (formerly the Society of See also:Lady Artists) is wholly devoted to the display of See also:works by See also:female artists, and in 1891 the Society of Portrait Painters was formed to carry out the See also:object conveyed in its See also:title. Two associations advance the art of the See also:miniature-painter, and the See also:Pastel Society, formed in 1898, holds displays of members' See also:work at the Royal Institute Galleries. In See also:Scotland there is the Royal Scottish Academy. The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colours (See also:Glasgow) grants the title R.S.W. to its members, and the Society of Scottish Artists (See also:Edinburgh), founded in 1891, has a membership of nearly Soo See also:young artists. Other exhibiting societies which See also:call for mention are: The See also:Yorkshire See also:Union of Artists (See also:Leeds), which consolidates many See also:local societies; the See also:Nottingham Society of Artists, which also encourages See also:drawing from the living See also:model; and the See also:Liverpool Sketching Club, founded in 1870, which holds an See also:annual exhibition.
