FREDERICIA (FRIEDERIc1A) , a seaport of See also:Denmark, near the S.E. corner of See also:Jutland, on the See also:west See also:shore of the Little See also:Belt opposite the See also:island of Fiinen. Pop. (Igor) 12,714. It has railway communication with both See also:south and See also:north, and a See also:steam See also:ferry connects with Middelfart, a seaside resort and railway station on Fiinen. There is a considerable See also:shipping See also:trade, and the See also:industries comprise the manufacture of See also:tobacco, See also:salt and See also:chicory, and of See also:cotton goods and hats. A small fort was erected on the site of Fredericia by See also:Christian IV. of Denmark, and his successor, See also:Frederick III., determined about 165o to make it a powerful fortress. See also:Free exercise of See also:religion was offered to all who should See also:settle in the new See also:town, which at first See also:bore the name of Frederiksodde, and only received its See also:present designation in 1664. In 1657 it was taken by See also:storm by the See also:Swedish See also:general See also:Wrangel, and in 1659, after the fortress had been dismantled, it was occupied by Frederick See also:William of See also:Brandenburg. It was not till 1709—1710 that the See also:works were again put in a See also:state of See also:defence. In 1848 no See also:attempt was made by the Danes to oppose the Prussians, who entered on the 2nd of May, and maintained their position against the Danish gunboats. During the See also:armistice of 1848—1849 the fortress was strengthened, and soon afterwards it stood a See also:siege of two months, which was brought to a glorious See also:close by a successful sortie on the 6th of See also:July 1849. In memory of the victory several monuments have been erected in the town and its vicinity, of which the most noticeable are the See also:bronze statue of the Danish See also:Land Soldier by Bissen (one of Thorvaldsen's pupils), and the See also:great See also:barrow over 500 Danes in the See also:cemetery of the See also:Holy Trinity See also:Church, with a bas-See also:relief by the same sculptor.

On the outbreak of the See also:

war of 1864, the fortress was again strengthened by new works and an entrenched See also:camp; but the Danes suddenly evacuated it on the 28th of See also:April after a siege of six See also:weeks. The Austro-Prussian See also:army partly destroyed the fortifications, and kept See also:possession of the town till the conclusion of See also:peace.
