church and at the See also:age of fifteen, in opposition to his strong wishes, was shut up in a See also:convent; but although in the following See also:year he was induced to pronounce monastic vows, he had no liking for this See also:life. He acquired considerable reputation as an elegant writer both of Latin and Italian See also:prose and See also:verse; and from 1716 to 1724 he filled the chairs of See also:rhetoric at See also:Brescia, See also:Rome, Genoa, See also:Bologna and See also:Modena successively, attracting by his brilliant fluency a large number of students at each university. Through See also:Cardinal See also:Bentivoglio he was recommended to See also:Antonio See also:Farnese, See also:duke of See also:Parma, who appointed him his poet See also:laureate; and he remained at the See also:court of Parma until the See also:death of Antonio, after which he returned to Genoa. Shortly afterwards, through the inter-cession of Bentivoglio, he obtained from the See also:pope the remission of his monastic vows, and ultimately succeeded in recovering a portion of his paternal See also:inheritance. After the See also:peace of See also:Aix-la-Chapelle he returned to the court of Parma, and there devoted the later years of his life chiefly to poetical See also:composition. He died on the loth of See also:December 1768. As a poet Frugoni was one of the best of the school of the Arcadian See also:Academy, and his lyrics and pastorals had See also:great facility and elegance.
His collected See also:works were published at Parma in 10 vols. in 1799, and a more See also:complete edition appeared at See also:Lucca in the same year in 15 vols. A selection from his works was published at Brescia in 1782, in 4 vols.
