He entered the See also:army in 1741 and saw service in See also:Flanders and in the See also:campaign of See also:Culloden, becoming See also:lieutenant-See also:colonel in the 44th See also:foot in See also:March 1751. In 1754 he served in See also:America, and he took See also:part in the following See also:year in General See also:Braddock's disastrous expedition. In 1758 he became colonel of a new See also:regiment, and served in See also:Amherst's operations against See also:Montreal. He was made governor of Montreal, and promoted See also:major-general in 1761, and in 1763 succeeded Amherst in the command of the British forces in America; in 1770 he was made a lieutenant-general. In 1774 he was appointed governor of Massachusetts, and in that capacity was entrusted with carrying into effect the See also:Boston See also:Port See also:Act. The difficulties which surrounded him in the See also:execution of his See also:office at this See also:time of the gravest unrest culminated in 1775, and the See also:action of the 19th of See also:April at See also:Lexington initiated the See also:American See also:War of See also:Independence. After the See also:battle of Bunker See also:Hill, Gage was superseded by General (See also:Sir See also:William) See also:Howe, and returned to See also:England. He became general in 1782, and died on the 2nd of April 1787.
