GLATZ (Slay. Kladsko) , a fortified See also:town of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Silesia, in a narrow valley on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:Neisse, not far from the See also:Austrian frontier, 58 m. S.W. from See also:Breslau by See also:rail. Pop. (1905) 16,051. The town with its narrow streets winds up the fortified See also:hill which is crowned by the old citadel. Across the See also:river, on the Schaferberg, lies a more See also:modern fortress built by the Prussians about 1750. Before the town on both See also:banks of the river there is a fortified See also:camp by which See also:bombardment from the neighbouring heights can be hindered and which affords See also:accommodation for ro,000 men. The inner ceinture of walls was razed in 1891 and their site is now occupied by new streets. There are a Lutheran and two See also:Roman See also:Catholic churches, one of which, the See also:parish See also:church, contains the monuments of seven Silesian See also:dukes. Among the other buildings the See also:principal are the Royal Catholic gymnasium and the military See also:hospital. The See also:industries include See also:machine shops, breweries, and the manufacture of See also:spirits, See also:linen, See also:damask, See also:cloth, See also:hosiery, beads and See also:leather.

Glatz existed as See also:

early as the loth See also:century, and received See also:German settlers about 1250. It was besieged several times during the See also:Thirty Years' See also:War and during the Seven Years' War and came into the See also:possession of See also:Prussia in 1742. In 1821 and 1883 See also:great devastation was caused here by floods. The See also:county of Glatz was See also:long contended for by the kingdoms of See also:Poland and of Bohemia. Eventually it became See also:part of the latter See also:country, and in 1534 was sold to the See also:house of See also:Habsburg, from whom it was taken by See also:Frederick the Great during his attack on Silesia.
