town of See also:Russian See also:Transcaucasia, in the See also:government of See also:Tiflis and 49 M. by See also:rail N.W. of the See also:city of Tiflis, on the See also:river Kura; See also:altitude, 2010 ft. Pop. (1897) 10,457. The surrounding See also:country is very picturesque. Gori has a high school for girls, lid a school for Russian and Tatar teachers. At one See also:time celebrated for its See also:silk and See also:cotton stuffs, it is now famous for See also:corn, reputed the best in See also:Georgia, and the See also:wine is also esteemed. The See also:climate is excellent, delightfully cool in summer, owing to the refreshing breezes from the mountains, though these are, however, at times disagreeable in See also:winter. Gori was founded (1123) by the Georgian See also:king See also:David II., the Renovater, for the Armenians who fled their country on the See also:Persian invasion. The earliest remains of the fortress are See also:Byzantine; it was thoroughly restored in 1634–1658, but destroyed by See also:Nadir Shah of See also:Persia in the 18th See also:century. There is a See also:church constructed in the 17th century by Capuchin missionaries from See also:Rome. Five See also:miles See also:east of Gori is the remark-able See also:rock-cut town of Uplis-tsykhe, which was a fortress in the time of See also:Alexander the See also:Great of Macedon, and an inhabited city in the reign of the Georgian king Bagrat III. (980-1014).
