GREIZ , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, See also:capital of the -principality of See also:Reuss-Greiz (Reuss the See also:Elder), in a pleasant valley on the right See also:bank of the See also:White See also:Elster, near the See also:borders of See also:Saxony, and 66 m. by See also:rail S. from See also:Leipzig. Pop. (1875) 12,657; (1905) 23,114. It consists of two parts, the old town on the right bank and the new town on the See also:left bank of the See also:river; it is rapidly growing and is regularly laid out. The See also:principal buildings are the See also:palace of the See also:prince of Reuss-Greiz, surrounded by a See also:fine See also:park, the old See also:chateau on a rocky See also:hill overlooking the town, the summer palace with a fine See also:garden, the old town See also:church dating from 1225 and possessing a beautiful See also:tower, the town See also:hall, the govern-See also:mental buildings and statues of the See also:emperor See also:William I. and of See also:Bismarck. There are classical and See also:modern See also:schools and a school of textile See also:industry. The See also:industries are considerable, and include See also:dyeing, tanning and the manufacture of woollen, See also:cotton, shawls, coverlets and See also:paper. Greiz (formerly Grewcz) is apparently a town of Slav origin. From the 12th See also:century it was governed by advocati (V ogte), but in 1236 it came into the See also:possession of See also:Gera, and in 1S5o of the younger See also:line of the See also:house of See also:Plauen. It was wholly destroyed by See also:fire in 1494, and almost totally in 1802.
