HAMMERFEST , the most See also:northern See also:town in See also:Europe. Pop. (1900) 2300. It is situated on an See also:island (Kvalo) off the N.W. See also:coast of See also:Norway, in Finmarken amt (See also:county), in 70° 40' 11'' N., the See also:latitude being that of the extreme See also:north of See also:Alaska. Its position affords the best See also:illustration of the warm See also:climatic See also:influence of the north-eastward, See also:Atlantic See also:drift, the mean See also:annual temperature being 36° F. (See also:January 31°, See also:July 57°). Hammerfest is 674 M. by See also:sea N.E. of See also:Trondhjem, and 78 S.W. from the North Cape. The See also:character of this coast differs from the See also:southern, the islands being fewer and larger, and of table shape. The narrow strait Strommen separates Kvalo from the larger Seiland, whose See also:snow-covered hills with several glaciers rise above 3500 ft., while an insular rampart of mountains, Soro, protects the strait and See also:harbour from the open sea. The town is See also:timber-built and See also:modern; and the' See also:Protestant See also: This is the busy See also:season of the towns-folk. Vessels set out to the See also:fisheries, as far as See also:Spitsbergen and the Kara Sea; and See also:trade is brisk, not only See also:Norwegian and Danish but See also:British, See also:German and particularly See also:Russian vessels engaging in it. In the See also:spring the See also:great herds of tame reindeer are driven out to swim Strommen and graze in the summer pastures of Seiland; towards See also:winter they are called See also:home again. From the 18th of See also:November to the 23rd of January the sun is not seen, and the enforced quiet of winter prevails. Electric See also:light was introduced in the town in 1891.
