Brought up in the See also:wilderness of New See also:York See also:state, Harding, as a lad of splendid physique, See also:standing over 6 ft. 3 in., marched as a drummer with the See also:militia to the St See also:Lawrence in 1813. He became subsequently chairmaker, peddler, See also:inn-keeper, and See also:house-painter, See also:painting signs in See also:Pittsburg, Pa., and eventually going on the road, self-taught, as an itinerant portrait painter. He made enough See also:money to take him to the See also:schools at the See also:Philadelphia See also:Academy of See also:Design, and he soon became proficient enough to gain a competency, so that later he went to See also:England and set up a studio in See also:London. There he met with See also:great success, painting See also:royalty and the See also:nobility, and, despite the lackings of an See also:early See also:education and social experience, he became a favourite in all circles. Returning to the See also:United States, he settled in See also:Boston and painted portraits of many of the prominent men and See also:women of his See also:time. He died on the 1st of See also:April 1866.
