HEPPENHEIM , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the See also:grand-duchy of See also:Hesse-See also:Darmstadt, on the Bergstrasse, between Darmstadt and See also:Heidelberg, 21 M. N. of the latter by See also:rail. Pop. (1905), 6364. It possesses a See also:parish See also:church, occupying the site of one reputed to have been built by See also:Charlemagne about 805, an interesting town See also:hall and several See also:schools. On an isolated See also:hill See also:close by stand the extensive ruins of the See also:castle of Starkenburg, built by the See also:abbot, See also:Ulrich von Lorsch, about 1064 and destroyed during the Seven Years' See also:War, and another hill, the Landberg, was a See also:place of See also:assembly in the See also:middle ages. Heppenheim, at first the See also:property of the See also:abbey of Lorsch, became a town in 1318. After belonging to the Rhenish See also:Palatinate, it came into the See also:possession of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1803. Hops, See also:wine and See also:tobacco are grown, and there are large See also:stone quarries, and several small See also:industries in the town.
