IVREA (anc. Eporedia) , a See also:town and episcopal see of See also:Piedmont, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Turin, from which it is 38 m. N.N.E. by See also:rail and 27 M. See also:direct, situated 770 ft. above See also:sea-level, on the Dora Baltea at the point where it leaves the mountains. Pop. (1901) 6047 (town), 11,696 (See also:commune). The See also:cathedral was built between 993 and 1005; the See also:gallery See also:round the back of the See also:apse and the See also:crypt have See also:plain cubical capitals of this See also:period. The two campanili flanking the apse at each end of the See also:side See also:aisle are the See also:oldest example of this architectural arrangement. The isolated See also:tower, which is all that remains of the See also:ancient See also:abbey of S. Stefano, is slightly later. The See also:hill above the town is crowned by the imposing See also:Castello delle Quattro Torri, built in 1358, and now a See also:prison. One of the four towers was destroyed by See also:lightning in 1676. A See also:tramway runs to Santhia.

standing at the junction of the roads from See also:Augusta Taurinorum and Vercellae, at the point where the road to Augusta Praetoria enters the narrow valley of the Duria (Dora Baltea), was a military position of considerable importance belonging to the Salassi who inhabited the whole upper valley of the Duria. The importance of the See also:gold-mines of the See also:district led to its seizure by the See also:Romans in 143 B.C. The centre of the See also:mining See also:industry seems to have been Victumulae (see TIclNuM), until in 10o B.C. a See also:colony of See also:Roman citizens was founded at Eporedia itself; but the prosperity of this was only assured when the Salassi were finally defeated in 25 B.C. and Augusta Praetoria founded. There are remains of a See also:theatre of the See also:time of the Antonines and the See also:Ponte Vecchio rests on Roman See also:foundations. In the See also:middle ages Ivrea was the See also:capital of a Lombard duchy,and later of a marquisate; both Berengar II. (95o) and Arduin (1002) became See also:kings of Italy for a See also:short period. Later it submitted to the marquises of 1Vlonferrato, and in the middle of the 14th See also:century passed to the See also:house of See also:Savoy. (T. As.) IVRY-SUR-See also:SEINE, a town of See also:northern See also:France, in the See also:department of Seine, near the See also:left See also:bank of the Seine, less than 1 m. S.S.E. of the fortifications of See also:Paris. Pop. (1906) 30,532.

hospital for incurables. It manufactures See also:organs, earthenware, See also:wall-See also:paper and See also:rubber, and has See also:engineering See also:works, breweries, and oil-works, its See also:trade being facilitated by a See also:port on the Seine. The town is dominated by a fort of the older See also:line of See also:defence of Paris.
