KAPURTHALA , a native See also:

state of See also:India, within the See also:Punjab. See also:Area, 652 sq. m.; pop. (Igor), 314,341, showing an increase of 5% in the See also:decade; estimated See also:gross See also:revenue, £r78,000; See also:tribute, £8700. The Kapurthala See also:family is descended from Jassa Singh, a contemporary of See also:Nadir Shah and Ahmad Shah, who by his intelligence and bravery made himself the leading See also:Sikh of his See also:day. At one See also:time it held possessions on both sides of the See also:Sutlej, and also in the See also:Bari See also:Doab. The cis-Sutlej estates and scattered tracts in the Bari Doab were forfeited owing to the hostility of the See also:chief in the first Sikh See also:war; but the latter were afterwards restored in recognition of the See also:loyalty of See also:Raja Randhir Singh during the See also:mutiny of 1857, when he led a contingent to Oudh which did See also:good service. He also received a See also:grant of See also:land in Oudh, 700 sq. m. in extent, yielding a gross rental of £89,000. In Oudh, however, he exercises no See also:sovereign See also:powers, occupying only the status of a large landholder, with the See also:title of Raja-i-Rajagan. Raja See also:Sir Jagatjit Singh, K.C.S.I., was See also:born in 1872, succeeded his See also:father in 1877, and attained his See also:majority in 189o. During the See also:Tirah expedition of 1897–98 the Kapurthala imperial service See also:infantry took a prominent See also:part. The territory is crossed by the railway from See also:Jullundur to See also:Amritsar. The state has a large export See also:trade in See also:wheat, See also:sugar, See also:tobacco and See also:cotton.
