KARATEGHIN , a See also:

country of Central See also:Asia, subject to See also:Bokhara, and consisting of a highland See also:district bounded on the N. by See also:Samarkand and See also:Ferghana (See also:Khokand), on the E. by Ferghana, on the S. by Darvaz, and on the W. by See also:Hissar and other Bokharian provinces. The See also:plateau is traversed by the Surkhab or Vakhsh, a right-See also:hand tributary of the Amu-darya (See also:Oxus). On the N. border run the Hissar and Zarafshan mountains, and on the S. border the See also:Peter I. (Periokhtan) range (24,900 ft.). The See also:area is 8000 sq. m. and the See also:population about 6o,000-five-sixths Tajiks, the. See also:rest Kara-See also:kirghiz. With the neighbouring lands Karateghin has no communication except during summer, that is, from May to See also:September. The See also:winter See also:climate is extremely severe; See also:snow begins to fall in See also:October and it is May before it disappears. During the warmer months, however, the See also:mountain sides are richly clothed with the foliage of See also:maple, mountain ash, See also:apple, See also:pear and See also:walnut trees; the orchards furnish, not only apples and See also:pears, but peaches, cherries, mulberries and apricots; and the farmers grow sufficient See also:corn to export. Both See also:cattle and horses are of a small and See also:hardy breed. Rough woollen See also:cloth and See also:mohair are See also:woven by the natives, who also make excellent See also:fire-arms and other weapons., See also:Gold is found in various places and there are See also:salt-pits in the mountains. The See also:chief See also:town, Harm or Garm, is a See also:place of some 2000 inhabitants, situated on a See also:hill on the right See also:bank of the Surkhab. The native princes, who claimed to be descended from See also:Alexander the See also:Great, were till 1868 practically See also:independent, though their See also:allegiance was claimed in an ineffective way by Khokand, but eventually Bokhara took See also:advantage of their See also:intestine feuds to secure their real submission in 1877.
