KAVANAGH, See also:ARTHUR MACMORROUGH (1831-1889) , Irish politician, son of See also:Thomas Kavanagh, M.P., who traced his descent to the See also:ancient See also:kings of See also:Leinster, was See also:born in Co. See also:Carlow, See also:Ireland, on the 25th of See also:March 1831. He had only the rudiments of arms and legs, but in spite of these See also:physical defects had a remarkable career. He learnt to ride in the most fearless way, strapped to a See also:special See also:saddle, and managing the See also:horse with the stumps of his arms; and also fished, shot, See also:drew and wrote, various See also:mechanical contrivances being devised to supplement his limited physical capacities. He travelled extensively in See also:Egypt, See also:Asia See also:Minor, See also:Persia and See also:India between 1846 and 1853, and after succeeding to the See also:family estates in the latter See also:year, he married in 1855 his See also:cousin, See also:Miss Frances See also:Mary Leathley. Assisted by his wife, he was a most philanthropic landlord, and was an active See also:county See also:magistrate and chairman of the See also:board of guardians. A Conservative and a See also:Protestant, he sat in See also:Parliament for Co. See also:Wexford from 1866 to 1868, and for Co. Carlow from r868 to 1S80. He was opposed to the disestablishment of the Irish See also:Church, but supported the See also:Land See also:Act of 1870, and sat on the See also:Bessborough See also:Commission. In 1886 he was made a member of the Privy See also:Council in Ireland. He died of See also:pneumonia on the 25th of See also:December 1889, in See also:London.
