KOKSTAD , a See also:

town of See also:South See also:Africa, the See also:capital of Griqualand See also:East, 236 M. by See also:rail S.W. of See also:Durban, 110 m. N. by W. of See also:Port See also:Shepstone, and 15o m. N. of Port St See also:John, Pondoland. Pop. (1904), 2903, cf whom a third were Griquas. The town is built on the See also:outer slopes of the See also:Drakensberg and is 4270 ft. above the See also:sea. Behind it See also:Mount See also:Currie rises to a height of 7297 ft. An excellent See also:water See also:supply is derived from the mountains. The town is well laid cut, and possesses several handsome public buildings. It is the centre of a thriving agricultural See also:district and has a considerable See also:trade in See also:wool, See also:grain, See also:cattle and horses with See also:Basutoland, Pondoland and the neighbouring regions of See also:Natal. The town is named after the Griqua See also:chief See also:Adam Kok, who founded it in 1869. In 1879 it came into the See also:possession of Cape See also:Colony and was granted municipal See also:government in 1893.

residence of the Headman of the Griqua nation.
