LORAIN , a See also:

city of Lorain See also:county, See also:Ohio, U.S.A., on See also:Lake See also:Erie, at the mouth of the See also:Black See also:river, and about 25 M. W. by S. of See also:Cleveland. Pop. (1890) 4863; (1900) 16,028, of whom 4730 were See also:foreign-See also:born and 359 negroes; (1910 See also:census) 28,883. Lorain is served by the New See also:York, See also:Chicago & St. See also:Louis, and the See also:Baltimore & Ohio See also:railways, by the Lake See also:Shore Electric railway, and by several of the more important steamboat lines on the See also:Great Lakes. It has a See also:Carnegie library, the Lake View See also:Hospital and the See also:Saint See also:Joseph's Hospital. There is a See also:good See also:harbour, and the city's See also:chief interests are in the See also:shipping of great quantities of See also:coal, See also:iron-ore, See also:grain and See also:lumber, in the See also:building of large See also:steel .vessels, in railway shops, and in the manufacture of iron pipes, See also:gas engines, stoves and automatic See also:steam shovels. The value of the factory products increased from $9,481,388 in 1900 to $14,491,091 in 1905, or 52.8%. The See also:municipality owns and operates the waterworks. A Moravian See also:mission was established here in 1787-1788, and a trading See also:post in 1807, but no permanent See also:settlement was made until several years later. In 1836 the See also:place was incorporated as a See also:village under the name " See also:Charleston "; in 1874 the See also:present name was adopted, and in 1896 Lorain became a city of the second class.
