ONEONTA , a See also:

city in the township of the same name, in the See also:south-central See also:part of Otsego See also:county, New See also:York, U.S.A., on the N. See also:side of the Susquehanna See also:river, about 82 m. S.W. of See also:Albany. Pop. (188o) 3002, (1890) 6272, (1900) 7147, of whom 456 were See also:foreign-See also:born, (191o, U.S. See also:census) 9491. The city lies about I10o ft. above See also:sea-level. It is served by the See also:Ulster & See also:Delaware, by the Susquehanna See also:division of the Delaware & See also:Hudson, and by the Oneonta & See also:Mohawk Valley (electric) See also:railways. In Oneonta are a See also:state normal school (1889), a state armoury, and the See also:Aurelia See also:Fox Memorial See also:Hospital. The city is situated in a See also:good agricultural region. The See also:principal manufactures are See also:machine-See also:shop products (the Delaware & Hudson has repair and machine shops at Oneonta), knit goods, See also:silk goods, See also:lumber and planing See also:mill products, &c. The first See also:settlement was made about 1780. The township was erected in 183o from parts of See also:Milford and Otego. Oneonta was known as Milfordville until 1830, when it received its See also:present name.

It was first incorporated as a See also:

village in 1848, and was chartered as a city in 1908, the See also:charter coming into effect on the 1st of See also:January 1909. The name " Oneonta " is derived from Onahrenton or Onarenta, the See also:Indian name of a See also:creek flowing through the city. See See also:Edwin F. See also:Bacon, Otsego County, N.Y. (Oneonta, 1902); and See also:Dudley M. See also:Campbell, A See also:History of Oneonta (Oneonta, 1906).
