ULSTER , a See also:

province of See also:Ireland occupying the See also:northern See also:part of the See also:island. It includes the counties See also:Donegal, See also:Londonderry, See also:Antrim, See also:Fermanagh, See also:Tyrone, See also:Cavan, See also:Monaghan, See also:Armagh and Down. Ulster (Uladh) was one of the See also:early provincial kingdoms of Ireland, formed, according to the legendary See also:chronicles, at the Milesian See also:conquest of the island ten centuries before See also:Christ, and given to the descendants of Ir, one of the sons of Mileadh. Interprovincial See also:wars frequently altered its boundaries, notably in 332 when the three Collas, sons of Eochaidh Doimhlein, conquered the See also:land between the See also:river See also:Boyne and Lough See also:Neagh, which became a See also:separate See also:kingdom under the name of Uriel (See also:Oriel or Orgial). Its princes maintained themselves until the See also:close of the 16th See also:century. In 1177 See also:John de See also:Courci, with the countenance of See also:Henry II., set out to the conquest of Ulster. His operations were gradually successful, and he became See also:lord See also:deputy of Ireland in 1186 (see above). The nominal reign of the last See also:king of Ulster closed in 1200. In 1585 Lord Deputy See also:Sir John See also:Perrot undertook the shining of Ulster (excluding the counties Antrim and Down, which had already taken shape); and his See also:work, though of little immediate effect owing to the rising of See also:Hugh O'See also:Neill, served as a basis for the See also:division of the territory at the See also:plantation of Ulster in the reign of See also:James I.
